CS 100: Computer Science - Keyboarding 1 (UEN Core Standards):

Course Description

In the beginning semester keyboarding course, the student will master touch operation on a computer keyboard. Correct fingering by touch and good techniques will receive primary emphasis; speed and accuracy will be given secondary emphasis. The fourth row numbers and symbols and 10-key pad will also be taught. The student will use basic word processing functions on a variety of document types.

Note: For students with either Partial or Minimal Mastery Level keyboarding technique, keyboarding improvement emphasis should be place on technique improvement before speed and accuracy. If student technique is evaluated as Mastery or Near Mastery Level, keyboarding improvement emphasis should be placed on increasing between 4 to 8 words per minute with no more than 2 errors per minute while maintaining high level techniques.

Course Standards

Standard 1: The student will demonstrate correct touch keyboarding techniques at the keyboard and use appropriate terminology to identify computer components.

Standard 2: The student will develop touch keystroking speed and accuracy.

Standard 3: The student will demonstrate a working knowledge of basic word processing functions and proofreading.

Standard 4: The student will develop skill composing at the keyboard.

CS 200 Computer Science - Word Processing w/ Advanced Keyboarding (UEN Core Standards):

Course Description

In this introductory course, students learn basic word processing skills. These invaluable skills include editing and proofreading documents, performing standard file management procedures, keyboarding, and creating applicable business documents to simulate a real-life job environment. Prerequisites: Keyboarding

Course Standards

Standard 1: Keyboarding - Students will use correct keyboarding technique to improve speed and accuracy. Demonstrate a speed increase of 4 to 8 words per minute on a 3-minute timed writing with no more than 2 errors per minute (6 errors on a 3-minute timed writing)

Standard 2: Basic Word Processing Functions - Identify all components of the word processing window and know default settings. Access features and execute commands using menus, toolbars, and the keyboard.

Standard 3: Editing - Demonstrate ability to make corrections indicated by proofreader’s marks. Use the writing tools for spelling, thesaurus, and grammar.

CS 300 Computer Science - Advanced Word Processing/ Desktop Publishing (UEN Core Standards):

Course Description

This course builds upon the knowledge and skills acquired in Word Processing. Students will learn the advanced features of word processing software. They will improve productivity by using the most efficient, timesaving methods to produce documents. Emphasis will be placed on the creation and enhancement of business documents. Prerequisites: Word Processing Basics
